The only rational explanation I can come up with is that they were all ready to release it and Warp didn't like it. I've spent the last 3 months trying to understand the rationale behind putting up a placeholder and not doing anything.

I refuse to believe it's a cruel joke/trolling. There's been enough dates that are significant to fans (eg 70 days, June 9th) come and go with no announcement. If it were a hack of the website, then they would've rectified it by now. That doesn't leave a lot of explanations.

Maybe I'll go and listen to Geogaddi and depress myself.

I've just been assuming that the box had nothing to do with the brothers. They might not even know about it!

I heard from a special source that the Sandisons have moved their talents to producing television programmes for UK channel ITV from the Manchester region, under the name of Boards of Granada.

Condsidering you as a reserved, reliable, sensible etc entry here (edit: forgot respectable), I was rather shocked by the fact the bleep-marketing got up your nerves that much.
But I totally dig what you say.
hypothetically: I think warp is frustrared they can't reach the impact they had in the early digital era. They also lost the indie-label to me. They're one of the new majors in my eyes. More and more I have the impression they "make" products that major way. Melting the warpstore with bleep was one of those inevitable steps of growth. Why do things allways have to keep growing? Why do things allways have to go faster? Why does boc have to make a new album? Yes I'm having a midlife crisis on this very moment, please turn of my computer now! This planet is one ball of matter under the influence of a sum of energy's. Can't we just make the sum and state this is all it gets and divide in a flexible way to serve the needs of difference instead of demanding equality and useless rights that in the end only serve for the biggest baddest richest fastest piece of crap orbiting around the sun.

pfffffff

And I'm not even drunk

Essentially, believe the record is never coming then anything which comes is a massive bonus.

I believe that to be the best way to anticipate anything in life. At least if it never happens, there won't be any hopes to dash.

We should start hacking websites and putting up " We want a new Boards of Canada album"

Then they'll HAVE to say something.
Right?

I'm happy knowing that the new album will probably be released this year. It just feels about right. On top of that, the new Tool album is expected this year, as well. So that would make 2011 the year of new Radiohead, BoC and Tool, at the very least. So actually, not a bad year, at all.

Of course, if no BoC or Tool shows up, then it's just the year that we were treated to the disappointing/lazily-made King of Limbs, by itself. ... :/

Some years are good..

This is the way I tell people to think, but I really find it hard to think that way myself.

I agree it's difficult to do, but i do it with many things that are out of my control, sport teams, music, books etc..

What if there's an album that's been finished since December 2008, but then Islamic radicalists or Christian zealots captured and locked up Mike and Marcus in a bunker/dungeon of sorts because their music was "satanic" and so around 1500 copies of the album are just floating around or sitting somewhere, like on a shelf in a Warp stock warehouse collecting dust in several cardboard boxes, and so then we get that and then we have to go free Mike and Marcus from the bunker/dungeon, but they've been making music the whole time they were trapped in there, so then we have six or seven new albums.....
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

You know, I honestly cannot see BoC or Tool releasing anything till 2012. We may hear something about it before then, but we're not getting a new album till then, for sure. The setup is just to perfect for either of those bands to ignore it.

In fact, I have a feeling several other artists or record labels may utilize that same timing.

On the bright side, Primus will be releasing a new album this September!

...though that's not even close to as exciting as some new BoC would be.

I also have the feeling that not too many people on here would be into Primus anyways, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, Antipop was kinda disappointing in my opinion, so I'm hoping they turn their sound back around. Allegedly this new album is supposed to be reminiscent of Frizzle Fry, so it could be cool, we'll just have to wait and see.
