Wow, I've clearly missed an interesting couple of weeks here in BoCville!
The whole 'thrift store VHS' thing is undoubtedly fake. The tunes are actually kinda nice, but the production is nowhere near refined enough for BoC's standards, even early BoC. Something about the fidelity screams
modern and
sterile too. Obviously it's quite distressed, but it certainly doesn't sound like an authentic tape from the 90s/early 00s. And I'm not even going to dissect the laughable backstory contextualising this release.
Biz's boxset theory is certainly something I'm more interested in, however! This fabled set is something I've been fantasising over for a very long time. I can't think of a release I'd want to have, by any other band or artist, more than this. Let's not forget that
the bros shared Buckie High on their Twitter page a few years back. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time they've publicly acknowledged an unreleased archival track? To me, this strongly implies that they're slowly lifting the lock on the vaults and gearing up to share some older material. Of course, this has been in discussion for a very long time (I believe the first mention of a big archival release dates all the way back to 2001) so I'd be too cautious to assign an ETA for this boxset, but I still believe the intention is there.
I'm also willing to put a bit of stock into the Stargate zine theory. As I've just mentioned to Echelon, it definitely wouldn't be the first time a publication capitalised on the mystique and falsely lured everyone in, but if you guys are saying Stargate is a relatively reputable zine and that Boards themselves have stated they prefer chatting to smaller publications, then I guess we can't rule it out as a possibility. Consider me cautiously optimistic!
