Last night I had a friend over and we were talking about our favourite gig experiences. Recounting the story of seeing The Prodigy in a 500-capacity venue back in their Jilted era made me think of the BoC communication gap in a new way.

So we were outside waiting to get in and the building was unlocked, the bar was open but the dancefloor was bolted shut. Meanwhile, from behind the big oak doors they were soundchecking. Every now and again you'd hear a snatch from the beginning of one of their tracks, the crowd would cheer outside, and then it'd go quiet. This went on for about a half an hour before they killed the lights and opened the doors.

It was only years later I'd meet a guy who had played on the same bill as them that told me the secret: the real soundcheck happened hours earlier. Liam Howlett's a perfectionist, just like BoC are. What we heard was an orchestrated fake soundcheck that played out from a DAT tape purely designed to hype up the crowd when there was no second billing. Well, it worked

So last year BoC were silent, and nothing was changing on the web page. But MDG was here to say "this is what's going on". Now, we have these little tweaks on the official channels and MDG is strangely quiet. Well, we're looking at the fake soundcheck here. This is all the prelude to something happening. He's no more going to stick his head out from behind the curtain to blow the illusion now than one of the Prodigy's roadies would have back in the day.

That's my new theory for 2011.

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster.

Wouldn't it be absolutely awesome if BoC released a special edition of their next album with a DVD of the album in full 5:1 surround sound and accompanying BoCish visuals? I bought the Beatles 'LOVE' album with the DVD and it was amazing to hear the Beatles' most psychedelic tracks in full surround. I would love to have the same experience with BoC.

Perhaps that's why the album is taking so long?

Hey, you could always record the DVD to a real 1980s VHS cassette with warped tape for that authentic warbly wow-and-flutter BoC feel. Or would that be too cliched even for a BoC fanboy?
