I'd personally be quite surprised to see BoC playing off of the apocalyptic fervor of the moment. I suspect (and certainly hope) they'll be going off in a different direction than that with the new album.

I just keep thinking as the days go by.... What is progressing about this album being released today?

We're talking about vaporware. I'd say that the good money points to them being retired at this point.

Ill put $100 on that bet. More is coming. They still have contractual obligations to fill.

If ANYONE was done making their own music at the moment, I would put money on beck. His last album finished off his record deal with interscope, and hes been producing for others for the past 3-4 years Im pretty sure.

It confuses me that people bring this up. Has there ever been a case where a band broke up and a judge ordered them back in the studio to create more music? Unless there is an advance to be returned I don't see how a contract would mean anything beyond ensuring any release would be on Warp.

What makes you guess that?

The date marks the entrance of the Universal Cycle in the Mayan calendar.
Could have been typically BOC to release on such a date.

I see now that there seems to be an dispute of which date the cycle begins.
Some say 10.02, others 11.02, and also 12.02.
You should post this on watmm, they would probably have more to say. :)

I just remember someone saying they still had 1 or 2 more to do a while back. Not based on anything concrete.

And its different when a band breaks up, but the brothers are brothers and have been making music ALL THEIR LIVES, why would they stop now?

Well, the dudes at virgin payd Maria Carey 28 million dollar to stay out of their studios in 2002. They probably can't force you into a studio. But if you're contracted to it, you might have to pay if you don't want.
that way 'The mama's and the papa's' were financially forced into a reunion years after the band had split because they still had to complete one album.

So the answer is yes
whooosh

They are not done, they are not breaking up, they are not continuing because of contractual obligations to a label.

Do you guys forget so quickly that Marcus, and Michael LOVE music. They have been doing this since before they were "famous" and they will continue to do it even if everyone stopped listening to them entirely. Face it, they make music because it's part of who they are.

The album is coming, everyone just needs to mellow out and wait for it.

its cool that you stay positive like I did for 4-5 years, but almost 6 years with silence, not even a "hey we will make something, at some point" I can't "mellow out and wait" - I think at the beginning of 2012 when everyone is saying "ok in 2013 they'll release it" maybe then it'll click. I still hope campfire was not how they have decided to go out...

from "Bunker Full of Memories," in Forcefield - 4-14-98

"After various hard-to-get releases on cassettes, Skam Records (and it's enigmatic offshoot Mask) the Scottish duo has just released their debut album Music Has The Right To Children on Warp Records. The first of five on the Sheffield label!

"Five albums. That might explain why Mike Sanderson and Marcus Eoin are extremely busy in their Hexagon Studio and reject most interview requests."

Just a point of reference (found it on bocpages)

Mini-album debate has been going on for ages. Can EP be considered as a "Mini-album" ?

http://rateyourmusic.com/board_message/ ... _is_543640

http://rateyourmusic.com/board_message/ ... 456#218456

http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/EP-levy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_play

Finnish wikipedia says that EP can be considered as an mini-album and in japan also I think. But in UK I think its controversial.

But hey..from wiki: " In the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a boundary between EP and album classification at 25 minutes of length or four tracks (not counting alternative versions of featured songs, if present)."

Trans Canada Highway EP is 28:00 min long and 6 tracks. IABPOITC 24:04 min and 4 four tracks. So they are running a little short on IABPOITC  ..and yes..I'm just having a laugh. Album comes out if it comes out. My whining wont make a difference.

turquoise70 wrote:And if they did for some reason release an album that was thematically mirroring back the way a lot of zany-ass people are thinking about things right now, I'd be less interested in hearing it. I don't care what people think about 2012 or the apocalypse and I'd prefer not to be reminded about them in what would otherwise be awesome, ear-liberating music.

Wow, some people need to pull their heads out of their asses and take a look around. The interest in apocalyptic events and such is not a random fad that a small number of 'zany-ass' superstitious people started because they heard some weird fact about the Mayan calendar.

The reason this is such a big thing these days is because the last ten years have witnessed many significant events that have diminished peoples' hope that the 21st century will be better than the 20th-- 9/11, 'wars on terror,' climate change, destruction of the biosphere, the increasingly alienating technoculture, the energy crisis, a worldwide economic slump, etc., etc. It's not because we are fixated on a literal 'apocalypse.' Christ, some people are fucking dense.

I suppose if you're an ignorant bourgeois, you might be in a position to make art that is not affected by the growing awareness of our bleak future (and present), but I think that BoC are very aware of world events and it would not be possible for them to make music that is free from all emotional connection to that. When we speculate that there might be an 'apocalyptic' theme on future release, we are talking about it in the sense of dystopian/apocalyptic 70's sci-fi movies-- narratives which depict a culture of paranoia, uncertainty, and general malaise. Try to imagine how you might translate those kinds of ideas and moods into sound. I think BoC already has many of those elements in their tracks, but I wouldn't necessarily say that any of their albums, with the possible exception of Geogaddi, focused on those kinds of dark themes. I think it would be cool if they made such an album, though.

I think there are more people in the world who are obsessed with the end of the world than people who are paying attention to the reality of how shitty things are getting. I think it's safe to say there are way more people watching shows like jersey shore than keeping track of the news. You can't deny that ever since the mayan calender date was brought to attention people have been going nuts about it, making money off it and preaching about the apocalypse and how and what's going to happen. Books, shows and movies are being made about it and that will continue to happen until the date comes and nothing happens. It's always been that way. People have and will always find a date for the end of days until they're randomly right one day after thousands of years of guessing. I don't think it's impossible that boc would use this annoying trend of ours as the subject of their album, but something tells me they won't. I'd love to hear some more dark stuff from them though. I'd love to hear anything.
