A family from Coolock is to feature in a Newstalk 106–108 fm documentary about the struggles of daily life. Check Yerself B4 Ya Wreck Yerself explores the story of one family’s life experience across two generations. Using audio diary recording techniques the producer worked over a period of several months to create this intimate portrait of the family’s daily life amid difficult circumstances in Coolock.
Told from the multiple perspectives of a mother who struggled with drugs for 20 years and her bright and articulate teenage daughters the programme charts the family’s often difficult but ultimately inspiring story, documenting the daughter’s determination to disprove the theory that addiction often travels through several generations within one family.
In parallel with the family’s personal story the programme explores the social landscape that saw many young people in communities like Coolock fall victim to heroin addiction in the 80′s and 90′s and examines how the experience of their parents generation has moulded their attitudes of today’s young people towards drugs.
The audio diary style lends the narrative a lightness and compelling sense of fun that contrasts sharply with the difficult subject matter in this story of resilience and hope.
