I was checking this out today and there's actually quite a lot of forum discussions on the net about how to get the SotL guitar sound, there was even a diagram of Brian McBride's chain of effects pedals I remember seeing somewhere.
The general consensus seems to be a combination of a lot of reverb (set to 100% wet, I don't really know what that means) and delay and probably a few other things. Brian was apparently asked the very question in an interview and said lots and lots of reverb.
Bearing in mind that I can't string two notes together on a guitar, I had fun trying (and managed to get a passable sound) plugging a guitar directly into my laptop and applying 3 or 4 reverbs and 2 delays in Logic.
Of course the guitar sound itself is probably only a fraction of a per cent of the genius of what they do.

Definitely reckon there is a reverse reverb in there somewhere. Lovely sound. Also "wet" means the amount of reverb in relation to the raw sound, in other words the guitar is almost 100% processed reverberated sound from the raw signal. Kinda not very well explained but there ya go.

Basinski: I wanted Cascade to become this crystalline organism like a star or a liquid crystal spaceship, a jellyfish traveling through the galaxy…

Think you might be referring to this old image?

There are a few other clues dotted about too...

Not too surprising to see a DL4 in there I guess? People often refer to reverb and delay, understandably, but if you're trying to replicate their sound using affordable effects, don't ignore a decent stereo chorus too. Set as wide as possible and with the speed dial cracked up fairly high too. This will enlarge the sound while giving a rough approximation of the earlier SOTL sound. Good luck.

Nice one, cheers, i'm just having fun messing about - teaching myself guitar at the moment and one of the great things about playing drones is that you've looooaaads of time to form the next chord shape!

I imagine that was a very soothing come down.

I am currently getting in to Per Aspera Ad Astra... may well be one of my new favourites..

Much discussion of SOTL down at The Willet Arms in Wimborne tonight. General agreement that the next live UK performance could well involve a coach trip of Twoism regulars. Stock up on cheese sandwiches, bottles of Thunderbird and sickbags now.

That new track is sounding incredible. I think this upcoming release could be their magnum opus. I've never heard anything so exciting.

Got Tired Sounds a couple weeks ago and love it, unsurprisingly. Don't really want to compare it quality-wise to Refinement of the Decline since they're both brilliant.

Highlights so far are: Requiem for Dying Mothers Part 2, all three Broken Harbors (especially part 3, dat ending), and Piano Acquieu - Fac 21 - Ballad of Distances 1 + 2 is my favourite part of Disc 2 at the moment.

Avec Laudenum is up next! Looking forward to it :-D

At last! Fellow lid fans. :)

Didn't know that there was this many people who enjoyed SOTL. Saw them live for the first time ever back a few months ago in Chicago. Was right in front of Adam during their whole set. Simply amazing.

Also, I created this account for the sole purpose of keeping up to date with the latest news of this wonderful band and talk with other people who appreciate this band's work. Glad to see such a community exits!

Was wondering if anyone had a collection of old, old photos of live performances by SOTL. And any old recordings of live shows in the past. The ones I've found either the links are dead or the file is missing.

Cheers!

Welcome, sir.

All I have is a bootleg of Dublin, 23rd Nov 07, and then the recent New York gig (which is brilliant). Always on the lookout for great soundboard recordings.

Let me know if you need them and I'll PM you.
