How do you know? For all any of us can say for sure, "Dayvan Cowboy" could be comprised entirely of processed and looped samples of the Sandisons eating rutabagas. :P

Literally any of their songs from the past 10 or so years could be using software synths and/or effects. That you can't tell for sure one way or the other is why they're professionals.

Just based on things they have said in interviews. They said they don't like VA synths and I think they do their sampling on hardware like the Akai S series. We know that most of their sound sources are acoustic instruments/sounds recorded onto tape and samplers along with their Roland SH-101 and a few other vintage electronic instruments. They have been critical of 'laptop musicians' who do everything on the computer. It's certainly possible that they have used some software instruments on their past records, but it doesn't really fit with their aesthetic or workflow.

Which brings me a somewhat outlying question, in any of the lyrics loops or voice sounds, is there in any way one that is one or both of the brothers speaking and using that in a song?

Who knows? They have definitely used vocals from their friends, such as the percussion on "An Eagle In Your Mind," but it's hard to say if they have ever sampled themselves.

I think the fact that it takes them 5 years to produce 15 or so tracks for an album is testament to the idea they are NOT using computers to write music. If that were the case, there'd be a lot of pr0n surfing in between takes.

More like 100 tracks or more... When they were recording Geogaddi they recorded 90+ tracks! They only used 23 (24 Japanese Release) tracks for the album. So I think the reason they take so long is because they take their time putting the tracks together to form an album that flows well. I always wondered what those other tracks are doing... Maybe they redid a few and used them on The Campfire Headphase or Trans Canada Highway? I hope they release those other tracks one day, as a bonus to a Geogaddi re-release or a lost tracks album... who knows.

To the software comment... They have stated in interviews that they do not use software instruments. They do use computers to mix down their songs for an album, but that's it. From what I have read, I don't think they are too fond of software instruments, they are more organic/analog musicians.

I remember when they made a rare statement about the Old Tunes release that they were thinking about putting out a collection of their older un-used work

I wonder what catalog number will be used for the next album. Perhaps 200 is being saved for them? Or they could use 222, or maybe 234 (TCH was 123)...

I think I'm going to halt my BoC intake until the new album is released or at least announced.

I'm sorry, but that's a terrible idea. I'm not going to stop listening to BoC for anything.

Nah, nothing that serious... I might sneak a listen in here or there. It's just gives me more to be excited and anxious about. Once the album is released I'm probably going to only listen to Boards of Canada strictly for months because I'll be in such a grove. I also want to listen to their entire discography chronologically in one sitting too, this summer! :P

Now that is a good idea. I may have to do that on a road trip or something. Would be perfect going through Algonquin Park.

On The Campfire Headphase, you avoided the use of your trademark children's voices.
"Marcus: That was a deliberate thing. We got fed up with people saying that we're a formulaic band that you could kind of describe in a couple of sentences.

Michael: There were people who thought that that's what our sound is: a synthesizer and children's voices. That's not really fair. We've also seen a lot of people cropping up imitating the sound that we were doing before, and the imitation was always quite bad. Marcus: It's flattering when people say that they've been influenced by what we've done, but at the same time I hear tracks that people are doing right now who are doing the things that we did eight years ago. You get a hip-hop rhythm, a mono synth, and a child's voice saying something. At the time we were doing this, no one had done it, and it can leave you quite uncomfortable hearing this now. On this record, we wanted to prove to people that we are capable of more than just that. Michael: I think it can become really dangerous for a band if you don't have a certain level of self-consciousness about these things. You always have to stay a few steps in front of your audience. We always have people putting fakes on the Internet before a new record is released, and the fakes are always really electronic with little kids' voices and things like that. Probably next time around all the fakes will include wobbly guitars like the ones we use on the new album (laughs).
Marcus: Meanwhile, we'll come out with a very electronic record."

Don't take it literally. I think they were just trying to make a point.

I always love it when the world does not end when they say it does, then they say they miscalculated the time. Hahaha.
