Isn't art just a "Shit on your crap" scenario? No matter what, it's always negatively compared to previous artists.

What the hell happened in this thread?

The way I understand it, music and literature are connected and complementary. However, it is basic to understand that almost every aspect of our so-called reality was born with language. You know, art has much to do with suggestion. Word is the most primary mean of transmission that remains in our society, and so its suggestive power has become much higher than any other known form. Literature englobes both visuals and musicality of unlimited quantity and infinite resources, and so the complexity, that's why it can be extensible to almost every aspect of life. Music, on the other side, is more restrictive in terms of resources.

Language is what sets humans apart and 'above' to be a higher level of consciousness. In written form it can transcend temporal and spatial boundaries. The manipulation of language in ways that provoke insight and meaning is a phenomenal occurrence.

I don't think the problem is with literature, the problem is with spending time dwelling on pretentious thought patterns such as what is or isn't 'art'.

The ability to be transported to an alternate reality in literature is a blessing of the human condition. To mentally inhabit another place, to discover insights about yourself, to have a real sense of loss tied to the death of a fictional character or the ending of a story... I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't experienced that magic.

Wether something is art or not is purely subjective to each individual.
Personaly I can only think of art as something that can be seen as more than just the sum of its parts.
Perhaps I would define it as something that has transcended its intended purpose.

Is it realy possible to proclame that one entire medium is more worthy of being art than another, I doubt it.

There is loads of shit out there that I dont care for but snobs 'in the know' try to tell you that if you dont 'get it' as art then your scum. Fuck that shit! I'll decide what I think is art and whats not. (not directed at anyone here btw)

In the end, if you like something then well done, if you dont, find something else you do like and share it others. To define something as art seems like a waste of time.

This all just a little too high brow for my little brain  ...music in general and BoC's in particular, can take me on a journey that makes the greatest story ever told, in written form, seem mundane.

the way i see it, music and literature share similar qualities: both can be suspenseful, help you to truly understand your own feelings, make you feel happy/sad/etc..

but only literature can challenge the way you think, politically, socially, and mentally.

I think all forms of art are just as capable at that. Music/sound maybe not as well but visual arts are very good at those.

It might help if we also engage in other activities, perhaps we should take off a few zigs, maybe all of them?
