Didn't prevent them from releasing MHTRTC, Geogaddi, etc. etc. So I think it's a load of hogwash.

Well when was it leaked?

I disagree - reading their interviews they strike me as the type of perfectionists who would be pretty pissed off at a section of their output being represented by some shoddy quality tape-ripped Mp3's, MDG has also backed this up.

I imagine they're probably over it by now, but at the time they made those tapes nothing like Soulseek or bittorrent existed to put them into the wider public domain.

Now the reasoning that they'd be disappointed at the quality of the leaks as opposed to the leaks themselves might be more reasonable since they are perfectionists.

However, they did release them on cassette tape to begin with, and from my understand them, they weren't the kind I keep hearing about with "special tape heads" that apparently sound better than CD.

Regardless, whoever ripped it should have done it to FLAC, or WAV if FLAC didn't exist at the time and then release that alongside a version converted to 320 kbps MP3 files.

As if we never copied cassettes like crazy, how do you think bands like Metallica got their rise to fame? Funny that years later they would go on and harp about napster, it was just a newer, slicker version of the cassette trading days of old.

Completely of topic, (but sure that'll fit in this Thread then anyway Ha) but I was just reading this old interview from 1999 which i just came across. Y'all may have seen it already.

http://www.solesides.com/winblad/boards ... s1099.html

I had to giggle to myself at what they predicted they'd be doing in 2009 "Publishing books and releasing movies. That was the masterplan before we started doing Boards of Canada." Maybe they are involved in that, who knows but I'm guesing real life has put all that stuff on the backburner. Funny though.

Anyway, very brief but interesting interview particularilly for their tale of rock 'n' roll excess with the autechre lads :) Also fans of Surfing On Sine Waves it seems.

Nice find FF! :D Interesting that their projection for Geogaddi (in 1999) was it would be out in the spring of 2000. Only two years late then. Ring any bells??

Yep, it's becoming to be a bit of a habit for them isn't it?..hehe. Nice to see it that interview the BoC lads gettin props from both Autechre and Squarepusher. I know Autechre brought them to skam so that's understandable but I woudn't have put Squarepusher down as a fan of BoC.

we got it becaue some gal was trying to get back at her boyfriend that happen to have the tapes. i doubt she was all 'ooh, i better take this to the studio to rip it properly on highest quality equipment'.

Is that confirmed as true? I've never really thought about how the 'Old Tunes' came to surface, but now I'm quite interested. :)

Did anyone else feel a tinge of sadness reading Broadcast's entry?

The only reason I can see BoC upset by the release of Old Tunes is that obviously an old friend betrayed them by ripping and uploading their music to the internet. It's not like a label release where leak is obviously going to happen. The tape were only given out to close friends & family. *Shrug*

JUST GIVE ME THE NEW ALBUM.

Very sad yes. Just goes to show, 10 years is a long time. Also who would have thought that Tom Jenkinson back then at his peak would be doing the stuff he's known for now. And that Aphex, bar the odd DJ stint would appear to have abandoned the studio.
