That's a pretty cool song. I love the breathing in the first bit. Keep us updated with the short film, i'd like to see how it's used.

Put up a new EP last night, different to my usual stuff which some of you may be familiar with.

Free download, or pay what you like, if anybody wants to check it. Much appreciated :)

EDIT: Still haven't given up on the usual stuff either, and working on my collab project along with Shane Anthony, 'nineteen eighty six' :)

Nice tunes! The first song, Fotosynthesis, started and I was thinking: "Is this a cover of On by Aphex Twin?" lol. It's a really cool song. In fact it's a really cool EP. I'll be listening again I'm sure.

Solid work! 8)

I've been listening to A Winged Victory for the Sullen and Stars of the Lid a lot lately, so I figured I'd give the genre a try. I'm having lots of fun working on this song, and it's not done yet, but this is basically it. I'm still gonna bring in another violin or cello to harmonize with the melody of the first violin. Anyways, have a listen: https://soundcloud.com/747music-1/tyler-coulson-colour-in-the-clouds

I worked on it some more this afternoon. Have a listen. I think it might be finished.

ha thanks man, big fan of your work as you know. They're mostly old tunes from when I was an even bigger afx addict, finally got round to sorting them and tidying em up best i could :)

Had a quick listen, and it's nice. Not amazing or that intricately detailed, or melodically engaging, but it's nice. Doesn't offend me in any way.
Best track would probably be Flurophore, the samples of what sound like live percussion and the piano really add something interesting. Go down more that path, I think you could find a really nice sound that way. The way the track picks up steam about half way through is also really nice.

I get that it's for a film, so I'll forgive the repetitiousness, but I also feel that without the visuals I'm missing half the picture. It feels like a piece which is missing something.
Not really one of those pieces which could function on their own, nice enough though.

The atmosphere's nice, but the melody's not really much more than just "present" if you get me, it's not moving, not catchy, not engaging.
I mean I think you got your textures down pat but there's no real reason for me to come back to it. Nothing like the achingly sad stuff of SOTL or Winged Victory.

Really interesting sound play, but I wanted more structure to the track. I know it's a jam but you couldn't have moved it into a second phase? Bring some new ideas to it. It was nice though.

I've used nice way too many times in this post.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I spent so much time on the textures that I almost completely neglected the melody. I'm gonna work on it some more. Thanks for the feedback. :D

@ Telepathic Kid, thanks for the advice and listening!

Few more ideas I am working on, first is a shorter number and the second could be an out take from the Blade Runner Soundtrack. On the second track I took the advice of one of the guys from Air; make music that tries to seduce a woman.

Ooh GH, very nice. You should do more with vocals like that. Its almost Cocteau Twins like. Some more diverse lyrics would be a good idea. In fact, I'd love to hear a IV pop-song, youknow, like regular chorus verse chorus. Level +1!

Thanks Cupz. Kind words my man! Cocteau Twins are one of my fave bands in the world. Cherry Coloured Funk is probably my favourite song.
Yeah, I used to do a bit of pop, but my production skills have improved quite a bit since then.

I'm very opposed to getting nailed down into a genre, so my next ep/ album release could be anything at this stage.

Ok, I had heard of them obviously because of BOC, but hadn't heard them.

THANK YOU! I've had that track on repeat, which is a good sign usually. Her voice is amazing...

I'm always confused as to how people don't know these bands which are always so special to me. like you can't fathom how someone hasn't heard Heaven or Las Vegas.
It's weird, I guess.

Also I don't hear Cocteaus at all in that track GH, but I enjoyed it. The vocals sound like if they were recontextualised, they could work in something like a late 60's psyche jangle pop track. I got a huge psychedelic feel from the track, like mixing of The Zombies or The Free Design with like, early Jean-Jacques Perrey.
I'm with Hendrik though, if you're gonna go pop go flat out, just make a pop record instead of hinting at it. The repetitive nature of the vocals wore thin pretty quickly, but it would've been alleviated by some changes thrown in.

I agree. Though obviously it can work, it does wear thin after a while, which could make the track a one-time play. Might be interesting to think about when and how repetitive lyrics work. Maybe its the abstraction, maybe its a sequence of words that are powerfull enough to hold a song together. I'm not really sure. Maybe you can't have both a repetitive backing track and vocals but one or the other?

Repitition should be a thread.

Thanks for listening guys, and you both bring up some interesting points.

Is it the fact that there's a vocal sample looping throughout the track that makes it sound almost pop. Being honest, I'm not hugely interested in doing pop.

Repetition is interesting, & if the vocal is treated as just another instrument would it be ok, or does the fact that it's a vocal trigger your unconscious to expect more because it's a vocal? That's a good example you posted Cupz, but it has been done by a lot of artists to good effect, and maybe I'm just not doing it right.

I'm more interested in vocals as an additional texture. The problem may be that the texture/instrument in question is a vocal which is singing words, which as mentioned makes the brain try to make sense of those words and maybe want to know what words are coming next.

As I say, intersting points, and I appreciate your listening. :)
