Nice job :D

But as you say, there's no way this (or any of the other unidentified tracks in my opinion) is by BoC. Just a similarity.

Blimey, you're right...

If this is an early demo of the track it could explain why we never hear any of the mystery old stuff. They want to keep them secret because they intend to transform them (or have already been transformed) at a later date.

While I don't subscribe to the view that it is a definitive early version, there are definitely similarities there that go beyond the coincidental.

There are some similarities, but I've had a good listen and don't see it myself. Can anyone isolate the bassy/pitched down voice?

I guess they recorded it straight from vinyl, but it feels like they also ran it through old amplifiers, or whatever material they use for deteriorating sounds. Or maybe is it just NTS livestream compression...

They almost certainly ran the entire mix through their equipment. No track in that mix is left completely untouched, but some seem to be more playback than others.

I don't think Devo's Shrivel Up was touched at all.

Happy first post!

I think Shrivel Up was the least touched, but nevertheless was almost certainly sent through their mixer board/tape machine and may have gotten some minor EQ treatment to blend it in thematically with the mix.

BoC have a a relationship with Devo to a certain extent and it isn't our place to know, but especially with the death of one of the members of the group, one of only two pictures they have ever uploaded to twitter (the other being Bowie) was in relation to Bob Casale aka Bob2 after he passed away.

I suspect that they wished to keep it as untouched as possible as a token of their respects.

Agreed. I am not hearing much beyond possible inspiration. For some reason I get more of a Dead Dogs Two Remix vibe from that track.

I feel much the same. I couldn't really pinpoint what it was that they were mentioning which is why I made the mix to probe for any similarities. There are definitely some, and as I said, it goes a tad beyond coincidence into the realm of being a likely inspiration. I don't think that it is an early incarnation of Julie and Candy, though.

Bizarrely, Stuart Maconie played Slave to the Rhythm on his BBC 6 music show earlier that day. Hadn't heard it in years, then twice in one day.

Their old website used to say "Are you tired of the soup du joir?" It was on their contact page IIRC. An obvious nod to DEVO's Smart Patrol / Mr. DNA

They are definitely fans.

first few chords sound pretty good but it doesn't really line up to me, and i note the end is cut at an opportune moment where they go in total different directions

same for the statue of liberty thing, i think it is mostly superficial, unless you could expand?

Just wanted to chime in and say I love all of you! Being a part of the event and witnessing the thoughts of everyone as it was happening was such a fun moment in time. This mix is something special and I will be listening to it for a long time to come.

i would also comment more generally that I don't think the piano and fretless track is BoC, it seems to have typical library music tropes throughout that don't really appear in boc's work, not to mention vinyl crackle, I think it seems very unlikely that they would only have a vinyl copy of their work from the 80s.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there an old print interview or something where they mentioned Booji Boy's Funeral as one of the tracks that directly inspired them?

If The Campfire Headphase was a butterfly, would Acid Memories be the caterpillar?

Not sure I recall that interview, but who wouldn't be inspired by that track? It is awesome!

I'd heard it a bit more recently - watched John Wick 3 a couple of weeks back, then worked backwards from there via Ian McShane and a small ZTT nostalgia-fest (pointedly and purposefully skipping Love-fucking-joy as I went) . Was -not- expecting it to then resurface on Sunday night but I'm sure glad it did.

Thanks for posting :D

This confirms that the MBV esque interlude provided earlier wasn't sourced from anywhere in particular. This means that it is a sample of an early shoegaze boc track where they have been inspired by MBV to the extent that they wish to recreate that sound, such a short segment that they don't feel the need to include the source, or that they asked Kevin Shields very nicely if he would like to record a short guitar part to act as a transition on their mixtape.

Boards/MBV collaboration when?

A lot more to sift through now that this list has been officially released.

It also confirms that the origin of the percussion sample from 'On a rolling sea' are from Jupiter Prophet - 35.000 Feet.

Maybe I should dig up the sample sources and origins thread again as there is quite a bit more to add to it now. I apologise for allowing that to get neglected.

Also, the 'Julie and Candy' esque interlude has no source listed.
