That's a great observation supported by quotes from their interviews.
They often say they mainly did two things in the gaps:
1) taking time off
2) working on the new album

To add to that, they also seem to rework their studio setup between albums, which from what they've said in interviews seems to be a big factor in why Geogaddi was 2 years later than expected. They also mentioned in a TCH-era interview that they scrapped an entire album in February 2004 because it didn't feel right after they re-did their studio, so I think the long wait is mainly down to BOC's notorious perfectionism.

The new album is definitely coming, just a matter of when, and I suspect it's sooner than we think. To the naysayers I say: isn't it more fun to believe?

I don't know if it is correct to think/assume that they haven't released a new LP because they are perfectionists. In contrast to many famous artists, the Boards of Canada music project doesn't seem to be their main source of income. In short, they don't need to make a new Boards of Canada LP to make money. As a consequence, they can take as many years as they want, or even stop the project (I hope they don't) because their lives and the lives of their families don't depend on Warp, I think.

The very successful Boards of Canada music project might just be a side gig to them, which is something I find amazing.

Wherever they are, and whatever they are doing, I hope Mike and Marcus and their families are doing excellent!

They spend weeks tweaking hi-hats so yeah it's gonna take some time to make an album

I wonder if they changed the direction of the album due to the pandemic? I wonder if they were continuing down the road of TH, but COVID made them realize that if they were looking to influence culture, that it was time to change direction that had more to do with the feeling of joy/hope/inspiration?

I would absolutely welcome a spaced themed album that gave me the same feeling as SAWV2 or 2001 SO, I just hope we eventually get an album that consist of the likes of ROYGBIV and Olson.

I need a literal reflection of the last five years from them. Tomorrow's Harvest's honesty was what got me through the pandemic.
