When does mystery turns to shtick, a gimmick.
When does silence or atrocious minimal communications turns to contempt towards those who fork hard-earned money for your art. They often said that they do this music for themselves and their very close circle, we may be to them some whiny annoying bitches who always come and demand more, and I am sure that this is extremely annoying to them.

Who benefits from the gear sold, for I am believing that BoC receives absolutely nothing from that gear, it is purely in the hands of the record company. If someone orders gear and tosses in some music, then BoC would receive their pocket change for it said music.

Given that there is absolutely no way that two grown adults with families and activities could live off their art, then I guess it means they are busy 9:00-17:00 most likely.

In that context, no matter how important music is to you, it comes to be a hobby, a secondary track some kind of side quest.

Furthermore, age, health, family, etc. the train may have already left the station, and they might not even realize they're done. No more like you would know the last time you say goodbye to someone until you actually cannot do so anymore and reflect, oh, that two years ago was the last goodbye.

BUT to confirm anything would dry out the revenue stream, so... what do they do? Milk what's left of the lemon, t-shirts, reprints. Toss an odd mixtape to get the buzz going a little more, a last adrenalin shot to keep the heart pumping.

I would LOVE some new BoC, of course, but I am happy with what we already have. Unpopular opinion, I think they peaked with Geogaddi and IABPOITC, so if hey decided that this was it, I am also happy with that.

In the end, they do whatever they want, i just find it rude personally to be ghosted, some of you may feel the same. And if you tell me to grow thicker skin, well, that's like just your opinion, man.

Enjoy your Friday

Best take i have seen here in a long time. Thank you for posting. I fully agree. Aaaand ofcourse the fanboys will call it unhinged because it shatters their precious little echochamber they have going.

"They dont owe us anything" has been echoed for quite some time and it is true in the end. But damn itd be nice to get a little something over 12 years. The silence has definitely turned from a fun quirk to a giant bummer. I cant believe its been so long since the last album honestly. The 8yr between the previous ones felt like ages. Im younger than the brothers and my life has changed so much just since TH, its wild to think theyre still going at it making music. Im just holding out hope for an aphex style dump when they officially call it quits

Not really agreeing with that, they do owe us a goodbye if they're not going to make any more music (which btw I don't think it's the case right now).

Geogaddi was my favourite as well, the combination of the mood and the world-building and the detail of it. And the length. In some ways, even as much as I've enjoyed their output since and some of my favourite tracks have been after Geogaddi, they've never really done anything as good as that album since.

So I could agree that maybe they're winding down, the machine is getting rustier, output is coming less and less frequently.

Except for the fact that the remixes and production work they've done really hints at the fact that they've still got amazing chops and are still coming out with ideas that sound fresh and exciting. Listen to the Beck remixes, Sisters, the stuff they did with TSO and Nevermen and tell me that's a band that's done.

If anything, the fact that it sounds so different to their earlier work may be part of the problem. Ok, that needs elaborating on.

WE can listen to it and go "ooh yeah that's got the secret sauce". (Arguably you can say they managed to pull that off with SxT, even though it consisted of 90% other people's work, they still managed to convince a bunch of people that this track or that track could be them, until we'd identified them. You listen to SxT and you're not hearing BoC but like, you're hearing BoC.)

Anyway the remixes. Yes they're working off other people's ideas but what they add to it sounds at once like absolutely them while having no real reference points to their earlier albums mostly. That points at creative minds with at lot more to give. It doesn't sound like a band with a problem.

You know who would have a problem with that? A record label that wanted more of the same. A record label that is quite happy to repress dusty vinyl and cash in on their back catalog forever, reprinting decades old graphic designs on t shirts for a new generation of kids they want to introduce to work that's decades out of context rather than anything that speaks to now.

I don't think BoC is done and it's nothing to do with wishful thinking. Whether we'll ever hear any of it is down to how well they're getting on with the label they're contacted to. Maybe there'll be or already are stealth releases under different names. Maybe all this delay is trying to convince Warp to let them put out what they want to put out. Maybe it's a stall while they try and raise capital to buy themselves out of their contract. We don't know. We can't know.

BoC said "everything you do is a balloon". You're trucking along, hidden from view and then you release something and it floats up into view and shows where you are at a point in time. The remixes hint that where they are is somewhere really exciting... Everything else is just a t shirt

Not responding to anyone directly, just throwing this out there. If Warp/BoC are planning an ambitious marketing campaign, then let them achieve that. I get being anti capitalist, but let artists art, no matter the scale. BoC released some t-shirts, there's very little to be upset about.

With that out of the way, I'd like to express much needed optimism. I am now fairly confident we will see the start of the campaign this year. Bleeding into 2026 is completely possible, but it feels like that'd be due to a delay. There's no way the record isn't complete by now, so I assume all that's left is plan and execution.

I feel like we are just going in circles here. Its making this thread pretty boring to read actually. You all just keep repeating the same things over and over again while the actual speculation passes under your noses. Can we please ignore the trolls, the 3 paragraph rants on why you feel Boards Of Canada are the worst for literally being, "Boards Of Canada". You can tell a lot of people here must have started listening after "Tomorrows Harvest" dropped. The whole point of the game is that Boards of Canada never have, don't say, and wont say anything. They've only done a hand full of interviews. If they came to me right now and told me LP5 was on the way, I would lose all interest. That's just not how it works here.

Yes, "Boards Of Canada" shadow produce. Yes, they still produce! Yes, there is more music coming. Yes! It might be this year? No! I don't know when its going to be. Yes! The t-shirts are more than you think.

When its all over, all you will see is... "THE INTERNET IS EVIL. TRANSMISSION TERMINATED...."

It could be this year. They did it before. We have at least three more months.

  • August: Twoism | 1995-08-15 (30th anniversary)
  • October: The Campfire Headphase | 2005-10-17 (20th anniversary)
  • November: In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country | 2000-11-27 (25th anniversary)
  • December: Hi Scores | 1996-12-01
If anything, these are some nice anniversaries.

Source? Magic Window. I know this is going to make people quite upset, but I'm not going to point it out. I will give a hint though, Port Sulphur - Valentino's. The devil is in the details as they say.

I'm gonna echo Demo here with some positivity. I fully get why BOC/Warp teamed up with Impel and are selling shirts. BOC at this point is an institution whether we like it or not. Their legend and influence has grown beyond a mere project two brothers are working on. Their music is part of canon that extends beyond IDM. I am sure that like all of us artists, they would like to earn credit where credit is due and get compensated for their hard work and also use it to finance future projects.

This is a good thing. They are thinking about their legacy and using the good will of their fans to help them in this endeavor. Perhaps after TH, they felt a bit lost. Sort of a wandering period, but enough time has passed where they realize their importance in the music world beyond a well done angst ridden political statement from 2013.

As judging by the new photos, Societas and the Pioneers Plaque, BOC is no longer just them. They are the fans and the legacy too! And I think any new music will reflect that! Sort of a return to form and the classic vibe by with all new melodies and concepts.

I for one am very hyped. It's only a matter of time now!
Warning: This numerology post is not to be taken 2 seriously.

I can certainly see that realising official BoC tracks on Warp has a lot of pressure and expectations involved, that can be avoided by releasing music anonymously or under a pseudonym with friends, music that isn’t going to be dissected and music that doesn’t have to be perfect.

This particular track is interesting, connected to people they’ve worked with, and no musician credits on Discogs, unlike most of the other tracks on the album. Any other reason you think this is BoC related?

Port Sulphur was formulated upon Douglas MacIntyre recording tracks as a member of Sexual Objects with Boards of Canada producing

See guys? The devil is in the details! There's not just this, there is much more out there! I do hope they return to the Boards Of Canada sound soon though...

The Port Sulphur connection was made in this forum by user dana last November. I somehow missed it. That Valentino's track in particular does indeed have some very specific BOC vibes,.

The Valentino track is immediately obvious BOC had a hand in the production. That bass line with the drum tracks is where I hear it - and it reminds me of the Treat Em Right remix they did.

For the remainder of the Port Sulphur album, do we know if BOC had a hand in any of the other tracks?
